The academic board of the PhD course in Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Linguistic Engineering has wide-ranging research interests and can therefore offer advanced teaching both in many foundation research areas (historical linguistics, text linguistics, linguistic typology), and in applied research (lexicography, teaching of Euro-Asian languages, corpus Linguistics). Thus the overlapping areas of theoretical and applied investigation can be emphasised and doctorate students can be introduced to both theoretical and applied research.
The PhD course is linked to the new framework of academic disciplines and to interdisciplinary research. The areas belong to the broad grouping of L disciplines.
These closely linked disciplines are present in the curricula of the specialist degree planned by the Faculties to which the academic board members belong. The interdisciplinary areas, i.e. computer science for natural language processing and text theory, are not only the main interests of some of the board members but are amongst the research areas of the other members: they are one of the distinctive features of this PhD course if compared to the other courses of this university and to those of other nearby universities.

It's a PhD course which is intended to attract researchers interested in:
  • pursuing theoretical studies on language and on natural-historical languages and on issues of language change
  • investigating the study of linguistic variation, plurilinguism, language contact
  • analysing the relationships between linguistics, computer science and studies on text perception

together with the practical implications of the study of both language contact and linguistic engineering, in other words issues connected with:
  • translation (including computer-assisted translation)
  • specific languages (preparation of language databases, thesauruses and plurilingual corpora)
  • the teaching of modern languages (assessment of learners' competences, planning and evaluation of teaching material, pre-service and in-service teacher training)
  • techniques of linguistic knowledge transmission (dictionaries, databases, annotated corpora which will be accessible on computer with the relative software: lemmatisers, taggers, syntactic parsers, browsers)
  • reception and interpretation of texts according to their genres and their elaboration/manipulation to make them available to the so-called culture industry.
